CHAPTER 11

My father passed away in January 1972. Between then and the conclusion of the second divorce from number one in June 1972, I continued a friendship with number two. She had been married to a physician who had attended medical school in Korea because he could not obtain admission to a US medical school. After coming back from Korea, he started his training at Erlanger Hospital. I was a third year surgery resident when he came as an intern. We talked a lot and we became friends. He had shared with me the difficulties of getting in medical school in the United States and his reasoning for going to medical school in Korea. Number two worked as a graphic illustrator for the Army while they were in Korea. She had a child just before moving back to the States that was either miscarried, aborted, or given up for adoption. I never got the full story. Number two knew at that time that her husband had Hodgkin’s disease. He had canceled his one life insurance policy for $200,000 before he found out about his illness. When he passed away, number two was left penniless and dependent on her own devices. She got a job at a Chattanooga newspaper. Number two had many problems of her own. She was manic-depressive—now called bipolar. She was described as “bubbly” when she was high or manic. I never saw her in the depths of depression except when she refused to take her medication and then she would usually isolate. She called me one Sunday afternoon and asked me to come over to her house. There were two resident friends who were in the room when I got the call and strongly advised me not to visit her. They felt she was attempting to attract me and knew she wanted to marry another doctor. I thought I could help. I could not be dissuaded. Boy, was I wrong. Bad mistake.

Coincidence or miracle? But if I had not taken that direction, I probably would not be where I am today. Romans 8:26 says “Everything works together for good to him who loves the Lord.”

Number two had what she described as several episodes of molestation and sexual abuse as a teenager by her father. She had written a lengthy treatise to document this. I tried to get a copy to keep in a safe place but she refused and kept it at home. As an adult she he had an almost nonexistent relationship with her father. Studies show that a young girl is most likely to get pregnant between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM in the afternoon, in her own home while both parents are working and not there, and the first time she has intercourse. To attest to all these facts, number two became pregnant as a teenager by a young man who was planning to and eventually did become a doctor, after school at her house while her parents were working, and she said it was the first time she had had intercourse.
